You should provide all numbers of your numerical reference citations.  The numbers' order should be ascending and you need to separate them by commas. However, they have different roles for superscripts and italic numbers in parentheses. For superscripts, you don't need spaces.  For italic number in parentheses, you need to add space between numbers.

For example,

  • Previous research 2,5,9
  • Researchers 1-3,5

Italic number in parentheses

  • Previous research (2, 5, 9)
  • Researchers (1-3, 5)
