APA style recommends not to use a hyphen for prefixes and suffixes. Only if the term can be misread or provide a single thought, you can use a hyphen.

For example,

Do not use hyphens.

  • pro
  • post
  • multi
  • pre
  • re
  • under
  • inter
  • anti
  • extra
  • mini
  • over
  • semi
  • sub
  • super

Use a hyphen

  • Two-parent home
  • Self-esteem
