Use uppercase letter "L" for liter when it stands alone, for instance, 5 L, and 0.3 mg/L. The reason is because a lowercase "l" in text can be misread as the numeral one. Lowercase "l" is used for fractions of a liter, for example, 5 ml, and 9 ng/dl.
