 It is used to talk about a specific thing, fact, or situation.

Ex: It is 72 degrees outside right now. 

The dog is too excited; it will not sit still. 

There is used to talk about something for the first time and to say that it exists.

Ex: There is a great new salsa joint downtown. 

There can also be used with modals such as there will be/must be, while it can be used in context of time, distance, weather.

Ex: There will be a storm tomorrow evening. 

There also means at/in/to the place.

Ex: I went to the meatball factory over there.
