The ACS style recommends to cite references in a logical place in the sentence.  For example, after authors' names, certain terms, particular research, etc.  If you can't find a logical place you can add references the end of sentence.  

For example, 

recent investigations (citation) ....

Previous research (citation) .....

Results (citation) ....

was reported (citation ).... 

a mechanics study (citation ) .....
