"etc." means others of the same kind.  So you can use "etc." for acceptable in lists, tables, notes, and within parentheses.  However, in Chicago Style, you should avoid "etc." usually.
On the other hand, "et al." means others.  Usually, "et al." is used by references. You don't need a comma after "etc."
