"Idioms are words or phrases that are not to be understood in the literal sense. The meaning of an idiom is therefore not deducible from the individual words constituting to it.
Example:

""A chip on your shoulder"" means you
   are holding a grudge (not that you
   are a t-1000 from the movie
   terminator)
"
