Verbs of attribution are used to refer to a source. They are usually used in conjunction with a quote or paraphrase. "Says" is a common verb of attribution, but others can convey a more specific meaning.
Examples:
The study found that people won't function well with little sleep.
Tom concludes, "Given the abundance of evidence, peanut butter is the best snack."
