Using space is varied based on the elements. Between signs such as conjunctions (+, ×, =, etc.) one space is needed.  However, a binary operation, relation sign, subscripts, and superscripts do not use space.
For example,

No space
-1
×3
>5
xa-b
xa+b
min(x1,x2)
limx->af(x)

Single space
xa + ya = za
a + b (c × d) - f = z
