Exclamation points should never be used in academic writing.
Exclamation points show that a statement is an emotional outburst, which is something that should be avoided in academic writing. The purpose of academic writing is to prove a point, not exclaim an opinion. The only time exclamation points should be used is when they are a part of a quote.
